About Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation Doctoral Scholarship – Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation (Pierre Elliott Trudeau)

The Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation was founded in 2001 as a living memorial to the former prime minister as an independent and non-partisan charity. In 2002, the Government of Canada provided the Foundation with the Fund for Advanced Research in Humanities and Human Sciences with the support of the House of Commons.

Private donations also benefit the Foundation. The Foundation promotes critical reflection and action in four fields that are relevant to Canadians by providing doctoral grants, awarding fellowships, naming mentors, and holding public events: human rights and dignity, responsible citizenship, Canada and the world, and people and their natural environment.

The Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation supports humanities and social sciences study and participation, and fosters a constructive discussion between academics and decision-makers in the arts community, industry, government, and organizations of civil society.

The Foundation: Encourages young talent by granting scholarships to the most promising doctoral students in Canada and abroad; Entrusts respected fellows and mentors with the goal of creating an intellectual community to help scholars ‘ research for their knowledge and wisdom; and develops and maintains an international network of fellows, scholars and mentors.

The Foundation is looking for candidates who are bold, original and forward-thinking. The program will last for three years and in the form of a stipend and a research and travel allowance will also provide generous support for the doctoral work of Scholars.

In the first year of their tenure, the Scholars will receive compulsory leadership training from the Mentors of the Foundation, who are leaders from across the government, private and non-profit sectors, and Fellows, who are experts throughout research and teaching, at the Institutes for Engaged Leadership. The Institutes will take place in different provinces, territories, and foreign countries.

In the second year of their term, Scholars will work with Mentors and Fellows to collaboratively plan and participate in a public conference with a flexible format, to be created and led by the Scholars themselves.

The program’s third and final year will be devoted to disseminating information. Scholars will continue to work closely with mentors and fellows to share their lessons with the Foundation over the course of their tenure. This project may take many forms, ranging from publishing a book to creating a theater or a fundraising gala. It will be an opportunity to innovate and experiment to share with a public audience the knowledge and skills gained through the experience of the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation.
