About International Reggae Poster Contest – Reggae Poster Contest (Poster Contest 2020)

The International Reggae Poster Contest (IRPC) is an event to promote a healthy international reggae culture. The contest highlights reggae’s globalization and its message’s resounding impact. Michael Thompson and Maria Papaefstathiou created the contest in 2011. As used by the International Reggae Poster Contest organizers, the umbrella term “reggae” includes all the popular Jamaican musical genres: Ska, Rocksteady, Roots Reggae, Dub, Dancehall and the unique Jamaican Sound System.

The primary reason for organizing the poster contest is to build an international platform to showcase a far-reaching vision: building a world-class Reggae Hall of Fame museum and performance center in Kingston, Jamaica, celebrating Jamaican popular music’s voice, vision and vocabulary. Frank Gehry, a name associated with innovative architectural design which promotes urban development, is the perfect architect for this great undertaking. The International Reggae Poster Competition is the beginning of a global campaign using powerful social media platforms and artistic expressions through the visual arts medium.

The IRPC’s other important goal is to help raise awareness of the Alpha Boys ‘ School, a vocational institution for underprivileged youth, located in the heart of Kingston, founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1880. This school is a great success story in Jamaica, creating some of Reggae’s most outstanding icons, including Don Drummond of the Skatalites, singer Desmond Dekker, and Yellowman, one of the first superstars of Dancehall. We think it is necessary to celebrate and replicate this remarkable institution. Without this fertile training ground, the global music we call Reggae might not have flourished.

International Reggae Poster Contest – Reggae Poster Contest (Poster Contest 2020)

There are many competitions for posters in the world of design and the arts. Some are focused on music, like jazz and rock; others are focused on social awareness. But there’s only one reggae music competition in the world. One of the reasons that this music has spread all over the world is that reggae speaks to our heart and mind about a wide range of social and political issues.

For this 7th competition, we would like entries to concentrate on messages that are spreading internationally through reggae and all other genres of popular Jamaican music. They are looking for creative visual expressions capturing these issues and presenting them at home and internationally through the energy and atmosphere of Jamaican culture.

The International Reggae Poster Contest’s goal is to raise awareness for positive reggae music and celebrate reggae’s global accomplishments and impact on the world. As used by the contest, the term reggae includes all the popular musical genres of Jamaica; ska, rocksteady, roots reggae, dub, dancehall, and the unique Jamaican sound system.
