African Union Commission – Saleema Youth Victorious Ambassadors (SYVA)
This Saleema Initiative aims to change the negative social norms underlying Female Genital Mutilation by adopting a holistic approach that considers this harmful practice to be the result of a given social, political, economic and anthropological context. The Commission believes that Female Genital Mutilation will be abandoned only by enhancing the cognitive social capital of communities as a whole and individual community members.
The communication campaign of the Saleema Initiative will therefore focus on working at grassroots level, involving communities, youth and women to participate actively in the dialog that will shape the Saleema Campaign.
The Saleema Theory This strategy seeks to promote behavior that ensure that every African girl in her natural and original form can develop to maturity: full, unharmed, saleema.
It is based on the assumption that FGM is embedded in socio-cultural norms and backgrounds and therefore remains with families and communities in the power to leave the practice. The emphasis is not on what people are’ needing to give up’ but on’ what they can gain from shifting.’ Only reform driven by people will put an end to the practice successfully.
A distinctive feature is the use of strong and positive communication techniques and methods, reinforcing important cultural principles while creating hope for progress, and motivating societies to create an environment conducive to a productive decision-making process that will contribute to a cultural shift in this negative activity.
